Imam Ahmd writes in his Musnad
 
قال رسول الله: من مات بغير إمام مات ميتة جاهلية
 
holy prophet said: “Whosoever dies without an Imam dies the death of Jahiliyyah.”
 
[Musnad Ahmad, takhreej of sheikh shoaib, 28/88/16876]
 
Sheikh Shoaib ul arnawut says:
 
This hadith is sahih with support of others, and this chain is hasan.

let us see a narration in tareekh tibri, and it is the famous incident when holy prophet asws started preaching for the first time, and he asked people to help him in his case, and in return to that, he will make them his brother, wasi and caliph. what you will see is that the same narration has been there in his tafsir, but wordings are manipulated
 
let us see first from tareekh tibri where the wordings are there
 
 
حدثنا ابن حميد قال حدثنا سلمة قال حدثني محمد بن إسحاق عن عبد الغفار بن القاسم عن المنهال بن عمرو عن عبدالله بن الحارث بن نوفل بن الحارث بن عبدالمطلب عن عبدالله بن عباس عن علي بن أبي طالب قال لما نزلت هذه الآية على رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم وأنذر عشيرتك الأقربين دعاني رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال لي يا علي إن الله أمرني أن أنذر عشيرتي الأقربين فضقت بذلك ذرعا وعرفت أني متى أباديهم بهذا الأمر أرى منهم ما أكره فصمت عليه حتى جاءني جبرئيل فقال يا محمد إنك إلا تفعل ما تؤمر به يعذبك ربك فاصنع لنا صاعا من طعام واجعل عليه رحل شاة واملأ لنا عسا من لبن ثم اجمع لي بني عبد المطلب حتى أكلمهم وأبلغهم ما أمرت به ففعلت ما أمرني به ثم دعوتهم له وهم يومئذ أربعون رجلا يزيدون رجلا أو ينقصونه فيهم أعمامه أبو طالب وحمزة والعباس وأبو لهب فلما اجتمعوا إليه دعاني بالطعام الذي صنعت لهم فجئت به فلما وضعته تناول رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم حذية من اللحم فشقها بأسنانه ثم ألقاها في نواحي الصحفة ثم قال خذوا بسم الله فأكل القو م حتى ما لهم بشيء حاجة وما أرى إلا موضع أيديهم وايم الله الذي نفس علي بيده وإن كان الرجل الواحد منهم ليأكل ما قدمت لجميعهم ثم قال اسق القوم فجئتهم بذلك العس فشربوا منه حتى رووا منه جميعا وايم الله إن كان الرجل الواحد منهم ليشرب مثله فلما أراد رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم أن يكلمهم بدره أبو لهب إلى الكلام فقال لهد ما سحركم صاحبكم فتفرق القوم ولم يكلمهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال الغد يا علي إن هذا الرجل سيقني إلى ما قد سمعت من القول فتفرق القوم قبل أن أكلمهم فعد لنا من الطعام بمثل ما صنعت ثم اجمعهم إلي 
 قال ففعلت ثم جمعتهم ثم دعاني بالطعام فقربته لهم ففعل كما فعل بالأمس فأكلوا حتى ما لهم بشيء حاجة ثم قال اسقهم فجئتهم بذلك العس فشربوا حتى رووا منه جميعا ثم تكلم رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال يا بني عبد المطلب إني والله ما أعلم شابا في العرب جاء قومه بأفضل مما قد جئتكم به إني قد جئتكم بخير الدنيا والاخرة وقد أمرني الله تعالى أدعوكم إليه فأيكم يؤازرني على هذا الأمر على أن يكون
 
أخي ووصيي وخليفتي فيكم قال فأحجم القوم عنها جميعا وقلت وإني لأحدثهم سنا وأرمصهم عينا وأعظمهم بطنا وأحمشهم ساقا أنا يا نبي الله أكون وزيرك عليه فأخذ برقبتي ثم قال إن هذا أخي ووصي وخليفتي فيكم فاسمعو له وأطيعوا قال فقام القوم يضحكون ويقولون لأبي طالب قد أمرك أن تسمع لابنك وتطيع

16 - الحسين بن محمد، عن معلى بن محمد، عن الوشاء، عن أبان، عن زرارة قال: سمعت أبا جعفر (عليه السلام) يقول: نحن اثنا عشر إماما منهم حسن وحسين ثم الائمة من ولد الحسين (عليه السلام). 
 
 
Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla ibn mmd from al-Washsha’ from Aban
from Zurara who has said the following.
"I heard abu Ja‘far (a.s.) say, ‘We are twelve Imams. Al-Hassan and al-Husayn are of them
then are the Imams from the descendants of al-Husayn (a.s.)."

It has been narrated on the authority of Jabir b. Samura who said: I joined the company of the Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) with my father and I heard him say: This Caliphate will not end until there have been twelve Caliphs among them. The narrator said: Then he (the Prophet) said something that I could not follow. I said to my father: What did he say? He said: He has said: All of them will be from the Quraish.

It has been narrated on the authority of Jabir b. Samura who said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) say: Islam will continue to be triumphant until there have been twelve Caliphs. Then the Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said something which I could not understand. I asked my father: What did he say? He said: He has said that all of them (twelve Caliphs) will be from the Quraish.

It has been reported on the authority of Jabir b. Samura who said: I went with my father to the Messenger of Allaah (may peeace be upon him) and I heard him say: This religion would continue to remain powerful and dominant until there have been twelve Caliphs. Then he added something which I couldn't catch on account of the noise of the people. I asked my father: What did he say? My father said: He has said that all of them will be from the Quraish.

It has been narrated on the authority of Amir b. Sa'd b. Abu Waqqas who said: I wrote (a letter) to Jabir b. Samura and sent it to him through my servant Nafi', asking him to inform me of something he had heard from the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam). He wrote to me (in reply): I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) say on Friday evening, the day on which al-Aslami was stoned to death (for committing adultery): The Islamic religion will continue until the Hour has been established, or you have been ruled over by twelve Caliphs, all of them being from the Quraish. also heard him say: A small force of the Muslims will capture the white palace, the police of the Persian Emperor or his descendants. I also heard him say: Before the Day of Judgment there will appear (a number of) impostors. You are to guard against them. I also heard him say: When God grants wealth to any one of you, he should first spend it on himself and his family (and then give it in charity to the poor). I heard him (also) say: I will be your forerunner at the Cistern (expecting your arrival).

Ibn Samura al-'Adawi reported: I heard Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) say, and he then narrated (the above-mentioned hadith).

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ سَوَاءٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَوَاءٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " يَكُونُ لِهَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ قَيِّمًا " ، ثُمَّ هَمَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِكَلِمَةٍ لَمْ أَسْمَعْهَا ، قُلْتُ لأَبِي : مَا الْكَلِمَةُ الَّتِي هَمَسَ لَهَا ؟ قَالَ : " كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ "  
 
jabir says that we were sitting with holy prophet asws when he said: there will be 12 greats in this nation. then he said something in low voice which i did listen. i asked my father what did he say? he said: they will all be from quraish
